BREAKING: The Alaska State Legislature Overrides the Governor’s Veto of Education Funding
On a vote of 46 to 14, the Alaska State Legislature overrides Governor Dunleavy’s veto of HB 57.
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Just moments ago, I took a decisive stand alongside my colleagues to override the Governor’s veto of HB 57, a vital bill that significantly increases base student funding. Your support and active participation in this process are not just appreciated—they are essential.
The Alaska State Legislature voted 46 to 14 to prioritize our students, teachers, and schools.
HB 57, sponsored by Representative Fields, embodies the strength of collaboration. What began as a simple cell phone ban for public schools has transformed into a powerful initiative to boost base school funding. This bill, shaped by thoroughly vetted public policies, demonstrates our collective commitment to investing in education.
As one of the lead negotiators for this legislation, I am proud of the hard work and dedication exhibited by my colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Their exceptional collaboration has been crucial in advancing our educational goals.
HB 57 marks a bold step forward, but it is only the beginning of our mission to fully fund our struggling schools. Today, we celebrate this important victory for education, and we must look ahead with unwavering optimism toward creating a high-quality, accessible public education system that supports every student.

Congratulations on beating the Dunleavy Curse. I hope you can keep it up through the budget vetoes. Does it take 3/4 of the collective House and Senate, or 3/4 of each body separately?
